Upgrading a Bedroom to a Luxury Retreat: Where to Begin?

Focus on updating creature comforts to create a true oasis.

The average person spends a third of their life asleep, so it’s important to create an inviting, cozy bedroom that elicits relaxation. If you’re looking to update your bedroom, you don’t need to do a full remodel in order to make a big change. Focus on manageable but impactful updates to get the most out of your budget.

According to Tony Stavish, owner of A.W. Stavish Designs, the traditional “bedroom suite” is on its way out – for their bedrooms, people want storage space, clean lines and a comfortable and practical bed that fits in the room properly. Stavish offers additional tips below to turn your bedroom into a luxurious oasis without breaking the bank.

Upgrade your bedding.

A good night’s sleep is the key to happiness, starting with bedding. Invest in a new duvet, a high-quality mattress pad and, according to Stavish, “The best cotton sheets that Target offers are great. You don’t have to splurge on Pratesi when Wamsutta offers a beautiful and inexpensive alternative.” If you’re buying new pillows, put your money into everyday sleeping pillows. Skip decorative pillows altogether – they create clutter, attract dust and can be pricey.

Less is More.

“Large footboards and bulky drapery are a thing of the past,” says Stavish. He suggests paring down the bed to a minimum to maximize space. An upholstered headboard offers a crisp look and doesn’t take up as much space as a footboard. He also suggests ditching traditional drapes and swapping in nice-looking raffia shades, which are more durable and higher-end looking than a vinyl mini-blind.

Invest in Order.

A good closet organization system can make an immediate impact on a room. By creating additional space in a closet, the chairs in your bedroom stop serving as clothing racks and become functional again. Add a tailored dust ruffle to your bed that matches your headboard to create a sneaky storage space that no one can see.

Rethink Your Art.

Swapping out prints in frames, getting quality family photos printed or adding a lighting element can instantly update the look of your bedroom. Focus on like colors for a relaxing, congruous atmosphere. Similar to family rooms, Stavish suggests pairing like items together. If your bedroom has several vases or catchall bowls, group them together in one spot for a cleaner look.

Get Rid of the TV.

While TVs are a staple in most bedrooms, many experts believe that bedrooms should be free of electronics and distractions. Swap in art for a more opulent look, or, if a television is a must, invest in a cabinet that can conceal it when not in use.

When updating a bedroom, investing in creature comforts can make an immediate and lasting impact. Focus on finding clever, inexpensive ways to add doses of luxury throughout the room to transform it into a true oasis.
